Things are ramping up for us at the Aksarben Curling Club. We just wrapped up assisting with Curling Night in America and also hosting our first two learn-to-curl sessions of the new season. With the Men’s and Women’s Olympic team trials coming just a few short months away, we want to let you know what to expect from your curling club in the season ahead.
The Trials are Coming
Perhaps the biggest deal of our season is the Olympic team trials. Festivities start November 11 and run through November 18 at Baxter Arena. Four men’s and three women’s teams will compete for their chance to be Team USA in this winter’s Olympics. Tickets are on sale now through the Baxter Arena box office as well as Ticket Master online.
During the trials, you’ll also have an opportunity to play curling! We’ll be using our home ice, the Holland Ice, to host a series of 10-team bonspiels. The A-event finals of each spiel will get to play their final match on the spare sheet of the championship ice! Games take place between the Trials draws, so you won’t miss any of the action. Sign up today as a team or an individual, it’s only $50 per player. We have limited space amongst the events but have spots for players of all levels. There is a chance the main ice will not be available during the spiel finals, in which case the finals draw will be on the Holland Ice with the other event finals.
What’s New – Fall League, New Dues Structure
The preparations for the trials fall right as we would normally start our season so we’ve had to change some things around. Instead of starting our leagues around the beginning of November, we’re having a 4-week fall league before the trials. Starting in late September, these leagues give a little preview of the season ahead. In addition to our normal Sunday afternoon and Friday evening options, we’ll have a Tuesday night league. After the trials, we’ll return to our Sunday and Friday curling into the spring, broken into shorter 6-week leagues rather than our normal 12-week winter league. More details are available on our home page.
To support the new league structure, we have a new, streamlined dues structure. Everyone is asked to join by paying $100 membership dues. Leagues are then open to members. The 4-week fall leagues are $60 per league and the 6-week winter and spring leagues are each $100 per league. If you curl in the two winter leagues, you’ll pay $300 for the 12-week season, which is slightly more than we paid last year. We booked more ice time on Sunday to allow players to complete their games and start the next game on schedule. You shouldn’t be rushed to get in 6 ends anymore!
What’s the Same – Where We Curl, Winter League, and More
Our leagues return to Baxter Arena’s Holland Ice for the third year. We will have room for people of all skill levels and ages. We still have Sunday afternoon and Friday evening leagues, we will host Youth and College programs, we will have the Irish Open bonspiel in March, and learn to curls throughout the season. Some of the details for these programs are still being finalized so keep an eye on our home page for more information. We’re hosting a couple more bonspiels this year too, starting with the “Bone-spiel” this October, and wrapping up with a Last Chance spiel in April.
