Newcomer Leagues

If you've thought about getting into curling but would like to learn more before jumping into leagues then our Newcomers League is for you!

The Newcomers League is designed for curlers with limited or no experience. It helps folks learn the game, sharpen their skills, and brush up on basics before jumping into our regular leagues. It's especially great for people who have taken a prior Learn to Curl session and want to take the next step, or prospective curlers who've never taken a Learn to Curl.

We start the program with a Learn to Curl session and partial game, and then the following weeks you get to play full games with on-site instruction and guidance during your match. All the equipment needed to curl will be provided by the club.

Our next Newcomers League will be a 3-week league on Saturdays at 4:15pm starting February 17, 2024.Learn more and sign up for our next Newcomers League!

Membership is required in order to sign up for leagues at Aksarben Curling. We’ve simplified the membership process this season. Curlers can purchase their membership through our Event Registrations page in the following categories:

Membership runs from September 2023 through August 2024. Your membership pays for club equipment, insurance, special member events, practice ice, membership with USA Curling, and provides free subbing privileges. Membership is reduced to just $30 from February 1 through August (ie, Spring and Summer leagues).

Prefer to pay your membership with a payment plan? Please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to set up a plan.

Sign up for leagues: You can purchase your league on our Event Registrations page. League games are $20 each plus sales tax. You do not have to have a full team! Individuals are welcome to join—we’ll find you a team to play with! Fall leagues begin in October; Winter leagues begin in January; Spring leagues begin in late-March; and Summer leagues begin in June. Learn more about our leagues.

New to curling and unsure about hopping into a league? It may seem like a big jump from learning the ins and outs of the game to joining a league, but we all started from where you are now! You’ll find that the Aksarben Curling community is always willing to share their knowledge and to help you learn more each week.

League Registration Process

We’re excited to be kicking off the 2023-2024 curling season! As our registration date approaches, we want to encourage you to talk to your prospective teammates to make sure you’re all on the same page about which league you’re registering for. Some league times fill up quickly, so we’re putting a few guidelines in place to help as many people as possible get into their first choice league as possible.

If there is a league you’re interested in, please plan to be online when registration starts. Our Tuesday 8pm league and Sunday 2:15 and 4:30 leagues tend to fill quickly. You may see us lock a registration page as we sort out exactly how many spots are committed, so we appreciate your patience. You can email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to access the league password or inquire about open spots.

We allow people to register for leagues in a few different ways:

  1. Register as a FULL team
  2. Register as a PARTIAL team
  3. Register as an INDIVIDUAL

(1) Registering as a FULL team: There are two ways that a team can register - you can appoint one person to pay for the full team, or you can each pay separately. If you’re paying separately, please list your other team members’ names in the “I'm curling with the following people” field when you register. In order to hold a FULL team spot in the league, you must have 4 confirmed players lined up. We can accommodate TBD spots if there are still openings in the league once you confirm other players. However, if individual ‘free agents’ sign up while you still have a TBD spot, we will likely assign someone to your team.

PLEASE NOTE: If you register a FULL team, we need to have payment from all members by September 9th to continue holding those spots. We will reach out to you before that date, and are happy to accommodate extensions or payment plans as needed.

(2) Registering as a PARTIAL team: If you have a group of 2-3 players and are looking to fill out your team, no worries! List your teammates when you register, and we will do everything we can to keep you together. We will pair you with individual ‘free agents’ as the league start date gets closer.

(3) Registering as an INDIVIDUAL: Don’t have a team? We’ll find one for you! Just sign up, and we’ll assign you to a partial team or group you with other individual ‘free agents.’ When you register, you can add a note if there is a particular position or positions that you like to play.

Membership: All league curlers must pay for a 2023-2024 season membership before the start of their first league game. Memberships are available for adults, military, and youth and run from September 2023 through August 2024.

Why Curling?
Curling is a great team activity for families and companies. The best part about it is that people of all ages and physical or athletic abilities can play together! Our volunteer instructors ensure that anyone who wants to curl can curl and have a blast doing it!

When you sign up for an event your group will learn about the basics of the game, how to play, and then play a partial game. But your group will also learn about strategy, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. It's a fun, unique bonding experience for everyone!

What should I expect?
We provide all of the equipment you'll need to play. Participants should plan to dress in warm, nonrestrictive clothing. Layers are good, blue jeans are not. We request folks bring clean shoes to help keep our ice clean—we provide rubber grippers to go over your shoes so you can walk safer on the ice. The temperature in the ice room is around 40-45 degrees.

Your event will start off the ice with a quick overview about curling and what to know to be safe. We'll then step onto the ice where our friendly instructors will walk participants through activities to learn basic techniques. This often includes small groups learning together. Folks will then reunite in groups of 4 to form a team with up to 8 people playing a partial game together on one sheet ('lane').

We can accommodate up to 40 people and 5 games simultaneously on 5 sheets of ice. Our instructors will provide assistance helping you know what to do throughout your game. Along the way, you'll learn about communications, decision making, and team work. If you're interested in food and drink options, you may coordinate with Baxter Arena to arrange for food and beverages.

How much does it cost?
Individuals wishing to book a private event must contact Baxter Arena to reserve 2 hours of ice time since we do not own the ice rink. Contact Nathan Wendel (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) at Baxter Arena for ice availability. Baxter Arena charges $600 for a two-hour session. Aksarben Curling separately charges $40 per participant with a minimum cost of $500. Private parties must provide an estimated number of participants at least 2 weeks in advance. Aksarben Curling will charge the per person fee based on the estimate and then an additional $40 per person beyond the estimate. Please allow at least 2 weeks advance notice of your private event so we can ensure you have plenty of instructors on hand for your event!

We are an entirely-volunteer run nonprofit organization. Revenue from private curling events helps grow our community-serving programs such as our Youth Leagues and College Leagues and our long-term plans to build a dedicated curling center in the Omaha metro area. Aksarben Curling members volunteer their time to provide instruction.

They'll start out learning the fundamentals of delivering a stone and sweeping, and play matches with assistance from our Aksarben Curling volunteer instructors.

Parents: We can always use help on the ice to keep things safe. Even if you are not a curler, you can help run some of the drills and supervise while children are waiting their turn. *The Spirit of Curling

Curling is a game of skill and tradition. A shot well executed is a delight to see and it is also a fine thing to observe the time-honored traditions of curling being applied in the true spirit of the game. Curlers play to win, but never to humble their opponents. A true curler never attempts to distract opponents, nor to prevent them from playing their best, and would prefer to lose rather than to win unfairly.

Curlers never knowingly break a rule of the game, nor disrespect any of its traditions. Should they become aware that this has been done inadvertently, they will be the first to divulge the breach.

While the main object of the game of curling is to determine the relative skill of the players, the spirit of curling demands good sportsmanship, kindly feeling and honorable conduct. This spirit should influence both the interpretation and the application of the rules of the game and also the conduct of all participants on and off the ice.

SafeSport

Aksarben Curling and USA Curling is committed to encouraging participation, the pursuit of excellence, and providing the best competitive experience for curlers at all levels of the sport. In order to create a safe and positive environment in which curlers can excel, the USCA promotes good sportsmanship and encourages qualities of mutual respect, courtesy, and tolerance. Abuse or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.

The USA Curling SafeSport program has been developed to raise awareness about misconduct in sport and institute prevention and response measures. More information can be found within our board-approved SafeSport Policy and Handbook.
