Core Values

Aksarben Curling's core values and the Spirit of Curling guides our behavior both on and off the ice. These principles are grounded in our love for the game and our respect for one another. The list of values and details that follow are not an exhaustive list of rules, but rather guideposts to help you find your way towards positive and inclusive interactions with everyone in Aksarben Curling spaces.

Be Respectful

Respect is a fundamental value of Aksarben Curling. Not all of us will agree all the time, but disagreement is no excuse for poor behavior and poor manners. We might all experience some frustration or competitive anger now and then, but we cannot allow that frustration or competitive feeling to turn into a personal attack.

It’s important to remember that a community where people feel uncomfortable or threatened does not help grow the sport we all love. Members of Aksarben Curling should be respectful when dealing with other members and with non-member participants at Aksarben Curling activities.

Be Inclusive

We strive to be a community that welcomes and supports people of all backgrounds and identities. This includes, but is not limited to, members of any race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, color, immigration status, social and economic class, educational level, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, size, family status, political belief, religion, veteran status, and mental and physical ability.

Be Careful in the Words that You Choose

We expect a level of conduct and discourse at Aksarben Curling events that is essentially professional in nature. If you wouldn’t say it to a colleague at work, don’t say it to a fellow member at an Aksarben Curling event.

We understand that you will often be broomstacking among friends and fellow curlers after league or at bonspiels, and that you may not have an expectation of professionalism among some of those people. But please remember that other members of Aksarben Curling, or the general public, may be within earshot and that you may not truly be as close with those around you as you think you are, particularly if alcohol is involved. Please be mindful of your surroundings and your conduct in these circumstances and err on the side of caution when there are any doubts. You are representing Aksarben Curling, as well as yourself, in these situations.

Be kind to others. Do not insult or put down other participants. Harassment and other exclusionary behavior is not acceptable. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Violent threats or language directed against another person.
  • Discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention.
  • Conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to fear for his or her safety or the safety of others, or to suffer substantial emotional distress.
  • Sharing sexually explicit or violent material.
  • Sharing (or threatening to share) other people’s personal information.
  • Personal insults, especially those using racist or sexist terms.
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.
  • Repeated harassment of others. If someone asks you to stop, then stop.

Be Friendly and Patient

We understand that everyone has different levels of experience and skill on the ice. We all have areas of our game with room for improvement. We want to be a curling organization where people can not only compete, but also feel comfortable asking questions and learning along the way.

When helping another member grow as a curler, either in their play or their on-ice etiquette, do so with patience and politeness. Remember that we all were new to the sport at one point.

If you see someone who you think needs help with some aspect of their curling skill development, always ask first before offering your advice. Remember that not everyone is always looking for feedback, no matter how well-intentioned.

When someone violates the generally accepted etiquette of the game, communicate your concern as politely as possible. If the issue is not urgent, consider discussing the matter after the match or with the player’s skip instead of addressing the player directly.

When We Disagree, Try to Understand Why

Disagreements, both social and competitive, happen all the time. It is important that we resolve disagreements and differing views constructively. Remember that we’re all different. There is strength in having a varied community with people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Different people have different perspectives. Being unable to understand why someone holds a viewpoint doesn’t mean that they’re wrong. Don’t forget that it is human to err and blaming each other doesn’t get us anywhere. Instead, focus on helping to resolve issues and learning from mistakes.

Spirit of Curling

The Spirit of Curling is a commonly used term in the sport. It refers to the respect curlers show, not only to one another, but also to the sport itself.

The following definition of the Spirit of Curling comes from the World Curling Federation. It should guide both the interpretation and application of the rules of the game and the conduct of all participants on and off the ice.

Curling is a game of skill and of tradition. A shot well executed is a delight to see and it is also a fine thing to observe the time-honored traditions of curling being applied in the true spirit of the game. Curlers play to win, but never to humble their opponents. A true curler never attempts to distract opponents, nor to prevent them from playing their best, and would prefer to lose rather than to win unfairly.

Curlers never knowingly break a rule of the game, nor disrespect any of its traditions. Should they become aware that this has been done inadvertently, they will be the first to divulge the breach.

While the main object of the game of curling is to determine the relative skill of the players, The Spirit of Curling demands good sportsmanship, kindly feeling and honorable conduct.

Dedicated Curling Facility

Aksarben Curling is committed to opening a dedicated curling community center to expand ice availability and programming, provide high quality curling ice, asn better serve the community. Having a dedicated curling facility will help fulfill Aksarben Curling's mission to make curling a lifelong sport that can be enjoyed by all ages, skill levels, and physical abilities, and build an inclusive and welcoming community through the spirit of curling.

We’re excited about this project because it will enable Aksarben Curling to provide:

  • High-quality curling-exclusive ice with consistent conditions where stones will curl both ways on every sheet (and no negative ice!).
  • More ice time and leagues all-week long on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends.
  • New and expanded programming including doubles, women’s events, and wheelchair/adaptive curling.
  • More curling opportunities for young Nebraskans including youth, juniors, school curling clubs, and college curling clubs.
  • A venue to host events including regional bonspiels, national tournaments, and community gatherings.
  • More educational opportunities such as Learn to Curls, skills clinics, and Newcomer Instructional Leagues.
  • Greater community partnerships with local nonprofits and schools.
  • Practice time for curlers to improve their abilities and become more competitive.
  • A dedicated social space to foster community and ‘broomstack’ after games.

We aim to open a facility that can accommodate 5 sheets of curling ice (ie, 'lanes'). It will include a community ‘warm room’ for spectators to watch curling, for teams to socialize with their opponents, and for educational and community events.

In late-2020 and throughout 2021, we extensively surveyed Aksarben Curlers about what they want to see in their dedicated curling facility. Aksarben Curling members’ input helped inform the initial floor plans and renderings created by Leo A Daly, which has provided pro bono conceptual design services for our efforts:

Stones are the main objects curlers see during their games. Local businesses may choose to “sponsor” a stone to put a message out to our membership or potentially to observers.

  • Sponsored stones may have messages or displays added to them, so long as it doesn’t distract from players’ ability to distinguish sets of stones
  • Sponsored stone displays remain for a specified number of “curling years.” Our curling year starts September 1 each year
  • The Board of Directors approves all displays before they’re displayed
  • Sponsorships are negotiated by the President or their designee

About the Sport

Curling has a long and rich history. While its origins are lost in the mists of time, Scottish curlers already were playing the game by the beginning of the 16th century on frozen ponds and lochs.

Their earliest equipment included stones formed by nature, each one unique. These stones often curved, or “curled,” as they slid down the ice, and the players used besoms or brooms to clear snow and debris from the path of the stones.

Today, curling is a game of strategy, finesse and strength, contested by teams generally comprised of four players. The principle of curling is simple – get your stone closer the center of the target circles, called the “house,” than your opponent. Players of all skill levels can participate and compete even at older ages than most sports allow.

Respect, honor and tradition are core elements of the game. Curlers are close knit and you can rely on a warm welcome in curling clubs throughout the world. Camaraderie among players is inherent in the sport and tradition calls for both teams to sit together after a game, discussing what was and what might have been.

A 2 Minute Guide to Curling

Curling Etiquette

Start with a handshake. At the beginning of the game, greet the members of the opposing team with a handshake, tell them your name, and wish them “Good Curling."

Finish with a handshake. When the game is over, offer each of the players a hearty handshake and move off the ice. The winning curlers traditionally offer their counterparts some refreshments.

Keep the ice clean. Change your shoes. Sand, grit and dirt are the ice’s worst enemy. The shoes you wear should only be used for curling. Keep them clean.

Compliment good shots, no matter which team makes them. Respect your opponent.

Be ready. Take your position in the hack as soon as your opponent has delivered his/her stone. Keep the game moving; delays detract from the sport.

Be prepared to sweep as soon as your teammate releases the rock.

After delivering your stone, move to the side of the sheet between the “hog “ lines, unless you are the skip. Leads and seconds are not permitted in “house” or “rings”, except when sweeping or to remove the stones after the count has been determined by the vices.

Be courteous. Don’t distract your opponent in the hack. Sweepers should stay on the sidelines between the hog lines when not sweeping.

Place your skip’s rock in front of the hack to help speed up the game.

All games on the ice should run approximately the same time. Therefore, if your game is an end or two behind all other games you should pick up the pace. Each player should be ready to deliver their rock when their skip puts down the broom.

New to Curling? Here are some useful tips.

Ice level temperature is approximately 5 Celsius/40 degrees F. It’s best to wear a light jacket or fleece over a warm shirt. Thin flexible gloves are also a great idea. Curling requires a little stretching and you will be more comfortable wearing pants that are loose.

Clean Shoes.  The ice needs to be clean, debris from dirty shoes can make the rocks behave erratically and cause damage to the ice.  Please bring a separate pair of clean shoes you do not wear outdoors. There is a changing room and lockers downstairs for men and for women.

The Club recommends that you wear grippers on both feet while on the ice, except when delivering a rock.  Do not step onto the ice with your slider.

No food is allowed on the ice.

Sliders, curling brushes and sticks are provided by the Club free of charge.

Please arrive 15 minutes before start time for ice preparations:  put on shoes, warm-ups, shoe taping, etc.

Please leave the scores on the board at the end of each game.

If you have to miss a curling game please get a replacement from the bye team or list of spares posted by the ice entrance & advise your skip.

HAVE FUN AND MEET NEW FRIENDS!
